Standing at the intersection of urban planning, technology, and sustainability, the Master in Design for Distributed Innovation (MDDI) offers a unique methodology to tackle complex challenges. Addressing the ways we produce and consume (almost) everything, the program proposes a methodology to deconstruct complex problems through a systemic approach to identify different but interconnected design opportunities by reconfiguring technologies, communities and ecosystems for a positive planetary impact.
Throughout DigitalFutures, MDDI took center stage with two captivating panel discussions exploring the crossroads between technology, humanity, and a new economy fueled by distributed manufacturing and data infrastructure. We delved into the potential of open platforms to facilitate local production on a global scale and explored cutting-edge digital fabrication strategies that promise to reshape our cities and communities.
One of the sessions focused on “Regenerative Materials for a Circular Economy”, where Alysia Garmulewicz, a leading voice in circular economy research, shed light on the urgent need for sustainable material solutions. With alarming statistics on plastic waste looming over us, Alysia urged a paradigm shift towards regenerative practices, emphasizing the abundance of biopolymers in nature and the imperative to design for biological and technical loops.
But MDDI’s approach is not just theoretical – the program provides hands-on, practical learning experiences. Alysia highlighted the course’s emphasis on regional context, encouraging participants to explore materials development within their own communities. Lorenzo Patuzzo, a social entrepreneur and founder of AkashaHub, brought another dimension to the conversation, discussing the intersection of blockchain and collective intelligence within communities. Through open systems and collaborative platforms, AkashaHub fosters collective action towards societal change, empowering individuals to unlock their potential and drive meaningful projects. In its vibrant space, ideas flourish, and projects take shape, spanning diverse fields from energy consumption to food production.
