Celebrating Our Global Learning Community

  • Dec 18, 2024

We’re thrilled to share the latest news from our global network of educational hubs and creative projects. From innovative educators to impactful projects, here’s a snapshot of what’s happening in our FLA vibrant community!

Global Educational Hubs

On September we launched th Fab Learning Academy, a new Academany program aimed at training educators to use digital fabrication technologies in K-12 settings.  The program was developed by five Educational Hubs from around the world providing resources, mentorship, and inspiration to educators and learners alike; and the support of the Fab Foundation.

The Fab Learning Academy’s network has expanded to include participating labs and institutions across diverse sectors and locations. Together, they form a dynamic ecosystem of learning and innovation. Our global network includes:

Meet Our Global Educators Community

This academic cycle, from Sept 2024 to March 2025, we welcomed 23 participants from diverse backgrounds, each bringing experiences and fresh perspectives to our learning community, from different continents and professions, a reflection of the truly global and interdisciplinary nature of the Fab Learning Academy. Some figures:

  • Gender Balance: Male (10), Female (11), Non-binary (2)
  • Nationalities: Participants represent regions including the Americas (USA, Costa Rica, Peru), Europe (Armenia, Germany, Iceland, Spain), Asia (China, South Korea), and Oceania (Australia).
  • Professional Profiles: K-12 Teachers (13), Informal Educators (6), University Professors (2), Makerspace Staff (2), Other Profiles (7).

FLA Students at the Mid-Point: Over 27 Creative Activities

Our Fab Learning Academy students have reached an exciting milestone, completing Modules 1 and 2 of the program. In just a few months, they’ve developed more than 27 innovative activities that integrate digital fabrication into educational curricula. These projects span subjects such as arts, language, science, and mathematics, designed for both primary and secondary education.

Highlights include:

  • Genre Comprehension Wheel: A tool to enhance reading comprehension through design and fabrication.
  • ScaleSpace: Visualizing the Solar System Through 3D Models: A project that combines astronomy with digital fabrication.
  • Understanding the Plant Life Cycle: A hands-on initiative blending biology and technology to teach ecological systems.

Why Fab Learning Academy for K-12?

The Fab Learning Academy empowers educators to use digital fabrication technologies not just as tools, but as transformative methods for teaching and learning. Students don’t just learn about technology; they learn through it, gaining hands-on experience in designing and fabricating across disciplines.

With a distributed educational model, participants collaborate in local hubs while connecting globally through masterclasses. This approach fosters a balance of practical skills and pedagogical insights, preparing educators to create impactful learning experiences for their students.

Stay tuned for more updates as our participants and educators drive creative change in classrooms around the globe!
