Sense Making Expert and Researcher

We are looking for a new member of our team!

We seek the newest member of our small but effective team that will help us consolidate our growth:

  • You think great projects aren’t the result of a single person but collaborative teamwork.
  • You believe the strength of the team is each member and the power of each member is the team.
  • You are not afraid to work in a constantly changing and evolving environment.
  • You are a highly organised self-starter who enjoys teamwork but can work independently.
  • You firmly believe in the power of collaborative creativity and knowledge sharing, driven by a mission to contribute to open-source projects.
  • You’re looking to work with 30 passionate individuals on more than 20 meaningful projects and are a mission-driven, detail-oriented, and efficient administrator; our team is for you!

Specific project context

Given the context of engaging communities in open technologies and participatory practices, Fab Lab Barcelona launched the Smart Citizen in 2012 to empower communities to better understand their environment by offering an alternative to the centralised data production and management systems used by the large corporations that constitute the driving force behind the bright city concept. The project set the groundwork for the newly European Horizon-funded CitiObsTwinAir and Elaborator projects:
CitiObs is a community-driven project aimed at enhancing urban environments through participatory sensing and data collection, leveraging local knowledge to inform sustainable urban development.
TwinAir project focuses on improving air quality monitoring through advanced sensor networks, fostering a collaborative approach between citizens, researchers, and policymakers to address environmental challenges.
Elaborator will provide European pilot cities with tools to monitor innovative urban green infrastructure solutions.

Those projects are integral to Fab Lab Barcelona’s mission at IAAC, demonstrating innovative uses of technology to empower communities and contribute to healthier, more sustainable cities.

Fab Lab Barcelona was the first Fab Lab founded in the European Union in 2007 and is a benchmark in the powerful network of over 2000 Fab Labs in over 100 countries. It supports the co-creation of circular solutions around specific challenges, creating safe spaces for citizens to express their needs, design, prototype and experiment with solutions that have a real and positive impact on their territories.

Main Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the project’s sensor deliveries, encompassing device testing, validation, and analysis of test data.
  • Assisting in the assembly and manufacturing processes of sensor orders, including monitoring supply stock and facilitating purchasing.
  • Providing support to the Smart Citizen community and partners, addressing specific needs related to the pre and post delivery of sensors.
  • Creating tools to streamline the manufacturing and testing processes for sensor units.
  • Engaging in additional internal initiatives aimed at designing, testing, and validating environmental sensing instruments.

Competences (Experience, Knowledge, and Skills)

  • Proficient understanding of sensors and monitoring devices, especially those related to environmental sensing in air and water quality.
  • Solid foundation in embedded electronics and pertinent concepts.
  • Proven track record in test-driven validation and analytical review of test data.
  • Experience with Git, as well as Python or R programming languages is advantageous.
  • Background in environmental sciences or related fields is beneficial.
  • Experience with digital fabrication methods, such as 3D modelling and printing, is an asset.

Specific Requirements

  • A working permit for Spain
  • Fluent in English and Spanish
  • Catalan is a plus – other languages are a bonus
