Network for Local Production and Community Innovation
The ENSEMBLE Network of Productive Spaces is an active community of people, organizations, cooperatives and associations that work together to exchange ideas, resources and knowledge. Through citizen training, digital inclusion and local production, we promote a manufacturing model that combines traditional techniques with new technologies.
What is Ensemble?
ENSEMBLE is a network of over 30 creative and productive spaces across Barcelona’s metropolitan area, including Fab Labs, makerspaces, craft centers, coworkings, and social associations. It connects infrastructures, knowledge, and communities, promoting local production, social innovation, and community-driven projects. The network organizes co-creation workshops, collaborative prototyping, capacity-building programs, and community initiatives, combining digital fabrication, traditional practices, and open technologies to foster social and environmental impact.
Our Values
ENSEMBLE is guided by values that honor traditional skills and cultural heritage, using digital tools to complement (not replace) ancestral knowledge. It promotes circularity by encouraging sustainable practices and reconnecting production with natural and social cycles. Collaboration is central, creating alliances, sharing knowledge, and building safe, inclusive spaces for collective innovation. Inclusion and diversity are celebrated, fostering cohesion across cultures, generations, and abilities. Above all, ENSEMBLE empowers people to be active creators and critical thinkers, supporting social innovation and stronger, more resilient communities.
The Project
Ensemble generates opportunities for innovation and collective action by creating physical and digital spaces that foster the exchange of ideas and knowledge. Our work includes developing interdisciplinary projects, organizing events, and offering training in digital manufacturing and crafts. We also provide support and mentoring to initiatives with social impact, all within a shared agenda that features talks, conferences, and collaborative meetings designed to strengthen community engagement.
Our commitment is rooted in community development and sustainability. We focus on empowering citizens, valuing ancestral production practices, and promoting digital inclusion. By encouraging local production and supporting the circular economy, we aim to stimulate innovation through people-driven solutions and strengthen collaboration among public institutions, private organizations, and civic initiatives.
At ENSEMBLE, we connect diverse members of our network, promoting cooperation and the sharing of resources across disciplines and backgrounds. We integrate spaces and people with varied skills and perspectives, fostering open communication and sustainable practices in all our operations. Through participatory governance, we ensure equitable representation and mutual support among members. While our primary work is based in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, we continue to expand our impact to other territories, collaborating with citizens, businesses, educational and scientific sectors, and vulnerable groups to multiply positive social change on both local and global scales.
Our Contribution
Almost fifteen years ago IAAC-Fab Lab Barcelona introduced the vision of Fab City Barcelona at the FAB7 conference in Lima (2011). Since then, we’ve been very much in contact with the emergence of a diverse and interconnected productive landscape — Fab Labs, Ateneus de Fabricació, makerspaces, craft centres, cooperatives, and industrial coworkings — that continue to challenge the boundaries between production, education, and civic engagement.
