From Fab Labs to Fab Cities: Support on the creation of new Fab Labs

Project in collaboration with the Ministerio de Cultura y Turismo del Gobierno de San Juan and funded by Consejo Federal de Inversiones (CFI) de Argentina to support the creation and implementation of a new Fab Lab in San Juan as a starting point in the development of skills and resources necessary to initiate the transition to a productive, sustainable and circular urban model, under the Fab Lab Barcelona and Fab City approach.

Area

Productive Cities

Type of Project

Executive Training

Focus

Creation and implementation of a Fab Lab in San Juan as a starting point in the development of skills and resources needed to initiate the transition to a productive, sustainable and circular urban model.

Solution

To support newly created Fab Labs through the development of specific transversal training modules based on capacity building.

Contribution

The main objective of this programme was to support newly created Fab Labs through the development of specific transversal training modules based on capacity building.

The training was implemented transversally throughout all modules at two levels.

  • Strategic Level. To connect the potential of Fab Labs and Fab Cities activities with the objectives of the Organisation.
  • Operational Level. To provide basic and advanced technological knowledge necessary to maximise the potential of the Fab Labs’ own infrastructure.

Specific activities deployed for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Government of San Juan include the following:

  • Introduction to Fab Labs: The Barcelona Model.
Inspirational introduction to Fab Lab Barcelona, overview and connection with Fab City and to the Global Fablabs Network.
  • Introduction to Fab City: Towards Productive Cities
Introduction to the Global Fablabs Network and the role of new fab labs as nodes within a global network. Introduction to circular models and supply chains, project preparation and management in the framework of the Productive Cities programme and the Fab City Full Stack methodology.
  • Exploring emerging futures: The Atlas of Weak Signals.
Based on the Atlas of Weak Signals methodology and a specially designed card game, participants will be introduced and guided through challenges that consist of constructing possible future scenarios.
  • Introduction to Digital Manufacturing
A programme that introduces and equips participants with the basic knowledge of digital fabrication.
  • Introduction to Prototyping. Impact Accelerator
Immersive learning experience in the form of an “Acceleration and Prototyping programme”. This customized module is an intensive, hands-on training programme and a wide-ranging introduction to the Fab Lab environment.
