Remix The School (Distributed)

Transforming schools into digital social innovation hubs through STEAM, sustainability, and making

Area

Future Learning

Type of Project

Support in developing innovative learning methodologies; Training of trainers programs; Curriculum design and development

The Goal

As schools navigate digital transformation and social complexity, they must evolve beyond traditional models to engage students in critical, creative and context-driven learning. Remix The School (Distributed) addresses this need by offering schools a toolkit for pedagogical innovation grounded in circular economy, biomaterials, co-creation, and digital fabrication.

The programme empowers schools to tackle local environmental and social challenges through hands-on, interdisciplinary learning, while strengthening digital competencies and building stronger ties between the school and its community.

Our Contribution

Remix The School is a 10-month blended learning programme designed for primary and secondary educators across the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona. Through a combination of bootcamps, mentoring, and maker experiences, the programme equips teachers and students with the tools to become digital social innovators.

We use biomaterials design, circular thinking and co-design methods to introduce the 7 R’s of sustainability: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Respect, Repair, Reflect and Reject—bridging environmental awareness with hands-on creative learning.

Key Objectives

  • Introduce the principles of the circular economy through STEAM and biomaterials
  • Equip teachers with tools and maker-based pedagogical strategies
  • Promote student self-efficacy, creativity, and problem-solving through the 5E teaching model
  • Improve the social perception of STEAM and encourage scientific aspirations in youth
  • Break down the walls of the school connecting classrooms with communities
  • Support teachers in becoming agents of change in their local environments

Methodology

  • Portfolio-Based Learning: Teachers document their learning and classroom integration
  • Bootcamps at Fab Lab Barcelona: Intensive, face-to-face co-creation sessions in a maker environment
  • Weekly Mentoring: Regular peer review sessions to share progress and solve challenges
  • Continuous Student Evaluation: Monitoring student assignments and project development
  • Expert Sessions & Webinars: Learning from global fabbers and sustainability leaders

Impact

  • 10 public schools in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area
  • 20 trained teachers (2 per school)
  • 800 students impacted through guided STEAM activitiesEmpowered teachers with circular STEAM methodologies and digital fabrication skills
  • Students learned to design and fabricate with biomaterials from food waste
  • Strengthened school-community relationships through project-based learning
  • Created a replicable model for environmental and digital literacy in public education
  • Supported by international partners to scale social innovation in schools
