Julia Steketee

Julia Steketee is a designer and material researcher with a background in furniture design and emergent futures. She holds a BFA in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MA in Design for Emergent Futures from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and ELISAVA Design University. Julia has worked with award-winning studios such as Jabuticasa and Jan Hendzel Studio, and collaborated with fine artist Genesis Belanger as a welder, woodworker, and ceramic assistant. From 2022 to 2023, she was a Research Resident at Fab Lab Barcelona, contributing to the EU CENTRINNO project by supporting the productive heritage of Poblenou through community-driven events and exhibitions. In 2023, she completed a postgraduate program in Management and Communication of an Applied Design Project at ELISAVA and ISEC Lisboa. That same year, she founded BAGACEIRA, a material research and design lab focused on creating materials and products from sugarcane bagasse, one of the world’s most abundant agricultural byproducts. Julia is fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French.
